Vocabulary

novels language

When one reads old novels , for example( the scarlet letter )one would admire the rich language it uses comopared to the some simple plain ones nowedays. My question is ; does the language of novels refect the spoken language at that time, in other word can one say ppl at that time were using those vocabularIEes in very day speech but now it has become a written language only?

For novels over 100 years old, we can only assume (as there were no tape recorders then ) that they reflect to a good extent the language of the period, esp that spoken in the social milieu of the author.

I think it can be an even shorter lapse of time - books written up to the 1960s can sound very old-fashioned now.
