Novels and learning English

Hello everyone.
I started learning English by myself one year ago. I used English language teaching Books and now I want to change the learning method because the old one made me feel bored. My friends told me that reading novels and short stories might be useful to improve my language BUT no translation during reading!!!
Just read!
Can anyone tell me how can I lean if I didn't translate the new words??
Emotion: sad
I tried reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson but it seems a little hard for a beginner like me. I only know the centuries-old novels not the recently-written ones. Don't say read children stories I can't bear this kind of stories. Emotion: stick out tongue
Would you recommend me a good novel to start with, please?

If you don't want children's books, Stevenson is fine. Or read Hemingway's Old Man and the Se a or Golding's Lord of the Flies or any short modern novel. You can use your dictionary sometimes; just don't use it constantly.
