what makes NOUNS unique or different from other parts of speech??please answer! i really need it now for my assignment..thank you!

Hi,

First of all, there are content words and function words. Nouns are content words (together with verbs, adjectives and adverbs). This basically means that you can convey at least the key concepts of what you want to express by putting the appropriate content words one after the other, but you wouldn’t be able to do the same with function words.

Then, (and from here my memories are scanty but I'd like to help), the other thing is, it rings a bell (maybe it was in the Universal Grammar theory) as it were nouns that children learn first, although I’m not sure. But (again I think in Universal Grammar) they say the two main parts of a sentence are the Noun Phrase (NP) and the Verb Phrase (VP), so nouns form the center of either of the two main parts.

You might want to Google the keywords nouns Chomsky basic and/or Universal Grammar NPs constituents or some variations of these, adding further things if they don’t give useful hits.
