Nouns

I have a couple of questions on identifying nouns in a sentence.

The first sentence:

Because of their intelligence and athletic ability, Karen Cornell and Leonard Johnson were named "Scholar Athletes."

The Second Sentence:

Congress debated the merits of the tax bill late into the night.

My questions are: is athletic ability a noun? if so, which type. is merits a noun? if so, which type.

Thanks.
