"World" is not an adjective. "Worldwide", as in "worldwide competition", is an adjective but it's a single word, a compound, not two separate words.

Ok, sorry for the bad example. However, I stand my ground that world is an adjective.

"World" most certainly does not = worldwide! As I said before, the adjective "worldwide" derives from the compounding of the noun "world" and the adjective "wide". So "world" is a noun and "worldwide" is an adjective (or an adverb when it modifies a verb).
