In the sentence, "On Earhart's attempted flight, radio contact aboard her plane was broken and never resumed."

What is radio? I'm thinking adjective that modifies contact.

yes, i see what you mean. the book stated that a noun can be used to modify another noun, however, it recommended us to describe it as an adjective! thanks!
