Noun modifiers

I've always thought that a noun modifying another noun, must be singular. Why then we have an expression such as "sports medicine". Shouldn't it be "sport medicine"

Thanks in advance.

The adjective is sports. (i.e., it is not a noun. Why this evolved this way, I don't know.)

It's actually just a well-known except to the rule. Many nouns are used as adjectives and almost all are singular when used that way. Sports is just... different.
