Noun Clauses

Hi! Is the below correct? Also should I use is or was? Thanks! Fulvio
1.Do you know who the man that painted the Mona Lisa is?
2.Do you know who the man that painted the Mona Lisa was?

Top answer

Both are correct. The present is correct because a portrait's painter does not change over time. The past is OK too because the painting was done in the past.

Both are correct.
The present is correct because a portrait's painter does not change over time.
The past is OK too because the painting was done in the past.
Given the choice, I'd pick the first.

But I would ask it this way:
Do you know who painted the Mona Lisa?

That works if the painter was either a man or a woman.
