Noun clauses

Ok how do you find out the different noun clause types for a sentance? All ive gotten so far is direct object is taking the subject and the verb and asking what and object of a preposition is just if there is a preposition.

I don't understand how to get subject and any other ones if they exist.

And can anyone explain to me why these are useful for life?
