Noun Clause and Adjective Clause

I've got a question and I don't know which one to choose.
On the way home, Gary told me something interesting ____ in his class.
(A ) happened (B) that happened

Out of intuition, I think (A ) is correct, but I don't know why (B) is wrong.

On the way home, Gary told me [ that something interesting happened in his class.] --> Noun Clause

On the way home, Gary told me something interesting [ that happened in his class. ] --> Adjective

Please help me out. Thank you in advance.
