Notwithstanding

Hi, all

I wonder, am I using "notwithstanding" correctly in the sentences below?
  1. Ignorance is the deadliest of diseases that has ever visited humans, notwithstanding every now and then they still succumb to it.
  2. Heaven and Hell are each other’s antithesis.Notwithstanding, they both covet humans' souls.
