notional meaning

Hi, Sorry for another question on the article. Can any word be used notionally (I am using this term but am not sure completely) and do away with an article? can any word be used?

nothing could have deterred this individual from holding on to his beliefs till the end, even disease, death or sword.

I think sword here is being used notionally and that is why no article is used. If it can be done for this, can it be done for others too?

Hi,

I think sword here is being used notionally and that is why no article is used. If it can be done for this, can it be done for others too? Yes. But I think it is really a matter of common usage. With some words in some contexts, it will sound OK, others it won't.

Best wishes, Clive.
