nothing after not

What's wrong with this sentence? If any, What should i say instead?

"I can't just cross my feet and do nothing!"
(as if for example I am worried about some threat.)

Somewhere else I read it is not possible to use "nothing" after a "not".

Forget what you read somewhere else. 'I can't ... do nothing' means 'I have to do something'.
