Notches of ink

"Even then my only friends were made of paper and ink. At school I had learned to read and write long before the other children. Where my school friends saw notches of ink on incomprehensible pages, I saw light, streets, and people. Words and the mystery of their hidden science fascinated me......." from The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.

I have difficulties understanding the underlined part.

What does "notches of ink" mean? According to dictionaries, "notches" mean cuts . Does it mean these words are written on the pages with heavy pressure? Are " light, streets, and people" the words the writer can understand?

I think the writer has just invented that phrase because notches sounds a bit more incomprehensible than marks. T he idea is that other people just see ink on paper, but 'I' see in my imagination streets, people, etc.

Maybe it is a misprint. He meant "blotches of ink."
