Notch

Hi,

Are the holes in a belt called notches?
If I've lost weight and I'm now able to tighten the belt to the next "hole", would it be correct to say something like,
"I've gained a notch in my belt."?

Thank you for your help
H.

Gaining a notch sounds like you are loosening the belt because you gained weight. At any rate, "notch" is the correct word.

(The following is US usage.)

The word "notches" needs to be used with some care, as it has strong connotations in the sense of tallying up conquests. For example:

"That's another notch in his belt (that is, he's slept with another woman)."

"He's got twelve notches already on his gun." (The gunfighter has killed 12 men. He records each man killed by cutting a new notch
