Not until

Which is the better way of paraphrasing the sentence: "Only on arriving home did I realise what had happened."?

A.It was not until I had got home that I realized what had happened.

B. It was not until I got home that I realized what had happened.

I prefer the second one but I guess they both are correct.

I also prefer B, but my reason is that I'm unsure about the correct form of "got."

In 1953 I asked my English teacher about a piece I was writing for the school paper - "we had got / gotten off to a good start." He told me it was slang and forbad me to use it. I never did get the answer.

Avoid "got home" as it is better replaced by "arrived home".

To me 'had got off to a good start' is fine.
