Not to/to not

Which one is correct?

"We invited them to our party, but they decided not to come"
"We invited them to our party, but they decided to not come"

The split infinitive is one of the three "cardinal sins" of writing that I grew up with. Generally, it is better not to split them. However, in this case to not split seems to have a meaning of more intention on the part of the writer. I find myself splitting them at times for that very reason.

[By the way, the other two sins were incomplete sentences and misplaced/dangling mod
