"not to" or "to not"?

"Used not to do something" and "Used to not do something"

I often use the first one without concern. But once I saw an American use the second one. So, which one is correct? Or both of them are acceptable?

I think that 'used not to' sounds odd if not wrong. I probably use 'didn't use to' more often.

'Used not to' was considered the only correct form in British English when I was at school over half a century ago. Most people, even then, said 'didn't use to', and the older form is rarely heard these days, though I have caught myself using it sometimes.

Some people write 'didn't used to', and I have even seen this form in magazines and newspapers. This mistaken form probably arose beca

For Americans, I would say "didn't use to" is the most common, followed by "used to not. . . " To me, "used not to" sounds strange -- maybe it's British?

EDITED to add: I wrote this before seeing the other replies, and accidentally typed typed "didn't used to" and then looked at it and thought, "no, that's wrong." Fivejedjon is right; it's an odd form and sounds pretty much the same wi

Part of the problem with 'used to' stems from the fact that there is no present-tense form 'use to'. Indeed, there appears to be no base form 'use' (/ju:s/). Apart from the similarity in sound of 'used to' and 'use to', this may be one reason why some people write 'I didn't used to' instead of 'I didn't 'use to'. There are no forms 'I use to' or 'I don't use to', and so people feel that 'I didn'

I am taught to use "didn't use to" in my school. But I read some English articles, the authors used "Used not to". I thought it is common in English so I often write "Used not to" instead of "Didn't use to".
According to all of you, "Used not to" sounds odd, strange and uncommon; and I shouldn't talk like that?

That's what I have determined by this thread, and I agree with it.

I would only say 'used to not do something'.

'I used to not worry about that until....'
or
'I didn't worry about that until.....'
