''Not this far into the Vortex'' what does ''into'' mean in this sentence?

Does into mean in this sentence to or from ?
Here is the context and it's from the movie Avatar:
Well, at least they won't track us up here. Not this far into the Vortex

I haven't seen the movie and know nothing about it, but "into" here seems to mean: "inside (of)." They're apparently running from someone, who is chasing them, and in order to lose them, they've sought refuge deep within the "Vortex," whatever that is.
