This seems to be an old-fashioned use of 'taken' as 'consumed'.
eg We take dinner at 8pm every evening.
eg Will you take another sandwich, Lady Bracknell?

NewguestThe flowers are usually not taken alone;
You don't usually eat the flowers (just by themselves).

(You use them to flavor other things.)
