Not sure which tense

Hello. I'm looking for the tense needed in this phrase:

I'll whisper in your ear and I want you to tell me what ..... I have been whispering or I had been whispering.

I think it requires the past perfect but I'm not sure.. what do you think? A quick explanation would help.
