Not sure MARGIN is correct word

I know what I am trying to say but I don't know if it is the right wording.
Let me know.

The margin between making it and not making it is slim. A team mate gets injured and you take his place. Had he not gotten injured, you would not have gotten your chance to play.

It's fine by me. No problem with "margin."
Personally, I'd replace "gets" with "is," or "becomes,"
and "gotten . . . . gotten" with "become . . . . had."
(All those "gets" seem lower register compared to the rest of your paragraph.)
