Not so much .. as ..

Dear all,

I just used this expression in a mail: "I am not so much worried as perplexed." Although I know this sentence is grammatical, I am not sure at all if this sentence is easily understood in a casual conversation. How do you native speakers think? I would appreciate your opinions!

One more thing: if I say, "I am not so much worried, but perplexed," does it make sense?

I am looking forward to your opinions! Thanks a lot Emotion: smile

Both sentences are correct. I would use the first sentence over the second; however, that is my opinion.

Hi English Maven, thanks a lot for your reply.

It is good to know that I used that sentence correctly (It looked a little convoluted to me at first, but anyway, now I know it was just me).

I don't know why, but I may feel comfortable using "not so much ..., but..." version if it is in a conversation. It is also good to know that it is still okay, that you'll be understood.

Thank you, CJ! I've been thinking I just need to use this construction a lot more, in everyday situations, and you provided such good examples. I would love to make a pungent comment next time, using these sentences.... hmm.
