Hi all
I am wondering if you could comment on these two sentences. Am I correct that only 2 is correct because the two parts after "neither" and "nor" do not mirror each other? Does 2 sound natural though? Is there a way to improve it?
1. Religion was simply neither part of my world nor my upbringing.
2. Religion was simply not part of my world or my upbringing.
Thank you.
Best wishes

You are right about the bad parallelism. It would have to be "Religion was simply part of neither my world nor my upbringing", but that "simply" there makes it fatally awkward. Even without "simply" it is stilted. The neither/nor thing makes one sound like a lawyer explaining geometry if you're not careful.
