Not only was he - or - He wasn't only

Not only was he the most......
He wasn't only the most.....

In the first sentance we have verb(was) + subject(he)

and in the second we have subject(he) + verb(wasn't)

why are they reversed? or am I completely off target?

In the first sentence by saying "not only was he" we emphasize that the others were .... bla bla as well. Not only him but also his friends for instance.

In the first sentence by saying "not only was he" we emphasize that the others were .... bla bla as well. Not only him but also his friends for instance. But in the second one we wanna emphasize that he was also ...... bla bla bla.... He wasn't only the most talented pupil but also the most hardworking..

Correct me if I am wrong here.
