Not only... but also

I found the following sentence on the CNN news website (I added the underline):

Scientists have warned for decades that climate change will make heat waves more frequent and more intense. That is a reality now playing out in Canada, but also in many other parts of the northern hemisphere that are increasingly becoming uninhabitable.

Is the underlined part grammatical?

In my understanding, the underlined part should be either "That is a reality now playing out not only in Canada but also...." according to what I learned at school.
