Not only but also

Hi Friends,

He not only ridiculed her needs but also imprisoned her in his home.

Is this the correct use of 'not only but also' when it comes to a longer sentence? I want to use it in one sentence, not break them into two using semicolon.

Thanks,
Sarah

Thank you, Mr. M. Wouldnt this work?

He not only ridiculed her needs; he also imprisoned her in his home.

Thanks again,

Marginally, but with no 'but'. I'm not confident that the first clause is independent.
