Not only-but also

#1 Not only the officer but also six soldiers were also killed.

#2 Not only is Ram is going to Mumbai for a month, but he is also going to Goa for a couple of weeks.

#3 Not only is Ram is going to Mumbai for a month, but also he is going to Goa for a couple of weeks.

#1 correctly uses conjunction "not only-but also". But in sentences #2 why it shouldn't use "but also" as used in #1? So I do that in #3 but don't know if #3 is correct.

Can we use only "but" instead of "but also" ?

taruns1008 #1 correctly uses conjunction "not only-but also". No, it doesn't; it has two 'also's. taruns1008 But in sentences #2 why shouldn't it use "but also" as used in #1 It probably should, but the placement of the adverb in other constructions strongly influences its placement here.

  • It is correct and also strictly correct, and you can use that too, but it does not seem to me as native as #2.

All are correct uses but #2 is smoother than #3 to my ear. Sentences are also a form of music.

Note also:-

#1 Not only the officer but also six soldiers were killed. - Don't repeat the 'also'.
#2 Not only is Ram going to Mumbai for a month, but he is also going to Goa for a couple of weeks. - Remove the extra 'is'.
#3 Not only is Ram going to Mumbai
