Both 1 and 2 understandable and correct?

1. He was not only smart but also plays tennis well.

2. He not only was smart but also plays tennis well.

Only #2 has the correct correlative coordinator structure, but in neither is the grammar parallel, and I would place a red X before both of those. He was not only smart but also skilled at tennis.

As a non-native of English....
I happen to have a feeling that when speaking #1 is more used than #2.
#2 sounds very grammatical but a little awkward or too precise....

What about this non-native-ish feeling?
