Grammar

Not only... but also

Hello!
Is it correct to say:
"In Greece, not only is the economic situation awful but also the social situation is unbearable". ?
My main points are:
1. If "not only" is used not right in the beginning of the sentence, is inversion still needed?
2. Are articles needed at all for "economic situation" and "social situation"?
3. Is comma needed before "but"?
4. Which synonym of "situation" would fit best?
Thank you in advance!

TinaMr 1. If "not only" is used not right in the beginning of the sentence, is inversion still needed? Its position in the sentence is irrelevant; inversion occurs.

Great! So my version is correct! Thank you, Mister Micawber!
As for synonyms, I thought it was wrong to use the same word twice in one sentence. But I couldn't come up with any of its synonym to replace it. It looks like, it 's OK to use it twice in this case.

Never wrong; sometimes poor style.
