Not one but the other

Can one say
a. I didn't say it was useful, but dangerous.
b. I didn't think it was good, but awful.

c. I did not say he was a teacher, but a doctor.
d. I did not think he was a manager, but a scientist.
?

They are intended to mean
I did not say (or think) they were A. I said (or thought) that they were B.
