Not having

In spite of not having an umbrella, I walked home in the rain.
Is "having" a gerund functioning as a noun- an object of preposition "in spite of"?

Top answer

It's a noun functioning as the object of a preposition. 'Noun' and 'gerund' are parts of speech, not functions.
