Not happy

Are these sentences correct:

1) He seemed too cheerful. So I decided to give him some news that would make him not cheerful.

2) He seemed too cheerful. So I decided to give him some news that would make him not so cheerful.

3) He seemed too happy. So I decided to give him some news that would make him not happy.

4) He seemed too happy. So I decided to give him some news that would make him not so happy.

I am not comfortable with 'not+adjective' in these sentences. I always thought that that construct was extremely "slangy".

Gratefully,

navitasan I am not comfortable with 'not+adjective' in these sentences. Me, too. I wouldn't call it extremely anything, but it does have a rakish tone that would be out of place in formal writing or speech.
