Not Edifying vs unpleasant

ADJ You say that something is not very edifying when you want to express your disapproval or dislike of it, or to suggest that there is something unpleasant or unacceptable about it.

• It all brought back memories of a not very edifying past.

The above is the definition and usage of 'edify' from my dictionary. Could anyone explain the difference or nuances betWeen not edifying and unpleasant?

Is there any difference if I replace with 'unpleasant' in the sentence in blue? Thanks!
