Not as John mentioned

1) The book was not, as John mentioned, on the desk.
2) The book was not on the desk as John mentioned.
3) The book was not on the desk, as John mentioned.

4) She did not, as John mentioned, talk to my wife about it.
5) She did not talk to my wife about it as John mentioned.
6) She did not talk to my wife about it, as John mentioned.

Are the sentences all correct?

In which case:
a) the speaker is confirming what John said
and in which case:
b) the speaker is contradicting John

I think in '2' and '4' we have restrictive clauses that show manner. The book was not on the desk in the manner John said it was. She did not talk to my wife about it in the manner John said.

Gratefully,
Navi.

I would interpret all of them that John mentioned what was in the main sentence. So "as John mentioned" is a nonessential element and would be set off with comma(s). If you use the clause, "as John described," that would change things.
