...not as in...

Hi,

I wanted to tell my friend that 'not uncommon' is not the same as 'common'. I said this sentence.

'In English language, a double negative doesn't make a positive not as in mathematics.'

Is my sentence grammatically correct and understandable?

Thank you in advance.
