Not able vs not in a position

1. He was not able tell the exact date when the last system updation was carried out.

2. He was not in a position to tell the exact date when the last system updation was carried out.

Could you please explain which of the two sentences is correct.

Both. #1 He couldn't do it. #2 This implies that he couldn't do it in that situation but might be able to in some other situation.
