Why is 'not' considered an adverb in this sentence? I think it's modifying a noun here.

Grammar is often debatable. Don't I know it. I'd say that "not" modifies the adjective "single".

I don't think it's either an adverb nor a modifier.

In my opinion it's a determiner. Or part of a compound determiner 'not a single'. The point is that it's a quantifier, and quantifiers are determiners.
