Not A but B

Hello, experts?

How are you doing?

I’m back with a silly question again.

Would you read the following question?

“ I tried not to put my energy and time into unchallenging work but thinking about what else I could do with this material.”

Can you focus on the part “but thinking about”? Grammatically, would it be OK to use “thinking” even though it doesn’t sound natural? I mean only in a grammatical point of view…

Your comment would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
