Nosedive

His condition had taken a nosedive. He had fever with chills and for most of the morning had lain nearly motionless on his mom's couch, wrapped in a blanket.

nosedive = : a downward nose-first plunge of a flying object (as an airplane)

from above sentence, could the nosedive be explained as badly/seriously? This is strange word i've read.
