Northwest or Northwestern?

We know Northwestern University. Also, we know Northwest Airlines. I wonder what's the difference?

Is it gramatically correct to name a school "Northwest University"? Or, name a airlines company "Northwestern Airlines".

Well, I guess to me
Northwestern University
indicates belonging to that area, from that area, of that area
while Northwest sounds just like any name, without any indication of belonging
