So I have to use "of" in the first example because there is the article "the"?

Is it also correct to say: He lives in the north of Germany AND He lives in north Germany.

Thanks

If he says:

He lives in the northeast of Germany, shouldn't 'northeast' be capitalized?

Rule: Capitalize points of the compass only when they refer to specific regions

Hi,

I'm not familiar with that rule. In my experience, people are pretty capricious about those kinds of capitals.

I wouldn't really say 'the northeast of Germany' refers to a specific region. Show 10 people a map and ask them to delineate it exactly, and you'll get 10 different answers.
