North south east west

Usually, I would say that anything in front of me is north, anything behind me is south, to my left is west and to my right is east. A compass might not be okay with that.

Can you say 'I am going north in relation to where I am standing.'

Does that make sense? Since I don't have a compass, to me in front is north.

Thank you
