'Nooks' are small enclosed places of many sorts, relics of building design and construction-- partially enclosed bay windows, shadowed areas where two walls meet or are offset, under stairways, over cupboards-- little sheltered spots where you can store your broom, display a knick-knack, or which just collect dust.
