none was/ were ?

None of them were there.
or
None of them was there.

Which one is correct ?

I have this problem because according to my knowledge words like anybody/anything, nobody/nothing , somebody/something are considered as singular in English , correct me if I am wrong

None can be used with either a singular or plural verb. Here I would go with none of them were , but others might prefer to use was .
