No, "hit" is correct, but you are on the right track.

The answer, in my opinion, is E. The sentence should've read 'before you know what has hit you'. The present perfect has hit, unlike hit (past tense), can refer to the future.

Btw, I don't see anything wrong with hits either( as Tam suggested ).

I, like most people who responded in the other forum in which you posted this question, can see nothing wrong with that sentence.

If there's nothing wrong with the sentence, how can we explain the mixing of the tenses used then? In particular, why is hit in the past tense when it clearly refers to the future?

What bothers me about the sentence is "know".

When I use the expression, I always use "knew"

It happened before he knew what hit him.
