Non-restrictive use of a relative clause

Regarding the following two sentences:

(A) There was a rumor that Alice was fluent in French, which turned out not to be true.

(B) There was a rumor that Alice was fluent in French, which was not true.

Which sentence is better? Are both acceptable? Also, is there any better way to express this idea?
