Non-native and slang

Is it weird if a non-native speaker uses slang? I believe most educated people do not use slang. So, spending a great deal of time on learning slang phrases, which change all the time and are mostly regional, is a waste of time. As a native speaker how does it seem to you? Thank you.

There is much slang that is fairly universal and can be understood by most native speakers. Some slang is used by nearly everyone, perhaps more in everyday speech than in formal writing.

I tend to agree, but it doesn't hurt to learn a few slang phrases which are more universally used.

Hi

Slang is often used to show familiarity with the language and the people you are speaking to. That may go wrong if you are new to the language

But, as Phil says, it's very much part of the language so it's good to be aware of it and pick it up, carefully, as you go along
