Non-conference cupcakes

Hello,

Could you please tell me what a cupcake non-conference game is? E.g.

- How important are these cupcake non-conference games to a squad like Ohio State before entering conference play?

From the context I think it could mean 'easy, piece-of-cake pre-season training games'.

Thank you for you help.

They are not pre-season training games. They count in the team's final record.

Each of the big football schools is in a conference. (Well, except Notre Dame, but that's another story.) Ohio State is in the Big 10. If they play a school that is not in the Big 10, they are playing a non-conference game.

You can play a very tough non-conference game, but there's not much benefit in
