Nobel Prize

The nobel Foundation named the 12 newst winners of the Nobel Prize in October in 2008. since 1901, the international award has been given out each year to scientists, scholars and peacemakers.

’s former president, Ahtisaari, was awarded the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. Ahtisaari has solved international conflicts in peaceful ways for 30 years. “He is a world champion when it comes to peace and he never gives up,” said Mjoes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Sinoussi and Montagnier, from France, and Hausen, from , share the prize for medicine.

Four Americans won the Nobel Prize this year. French author Clezio earned the prize for literature.

The prize is named after Swedish scientist and author Nobel. He created the award before his death in 1896. Nobel is best-known for inventing dynamite, but he is also remembered as a champion for peace. In his will, Nobel said that he wanted the prizes to be given to those who had made a contribution to the mankind.

The winners will receive their awards on December Sweden and . Each prize includes a medal, certificate and cash reward.
